Apologies
Opening
The Assistant Moderator who was the host welcomed the members to the meeting. The Moderator led group in a word of prayer using a Gusii Proverb on the 2016 Jubilee Year of Mercy.
Introduction
The members introduced themselves to the APWG stating their full names, their country of origin and ethnic group.
Reading the minutes of the previous meeting
The minutes of the meeting held on Saturday 1, August 2015 were read John Mbiti Mbuvi.
They were proposed by Gabriel Odhiambo and seconded by Rogers Adjomayi.
Some corrections were made on the contact list on the minutes.
Matters arising from the previous minutes
- Sikitoka Mboni had paid his 2015 membership fee at that meeting and not just pledged it.
- The collection of Tetela Proverbs was to be done by Elysee Meta and not Kevin Okubo and Laur Mwepu.
- Annual membership fee can be paid using Safaricom Mpesa telephone number:
0723 307 992 (Assistant Moderator).
- 2015 projects: The Executive Committee confirmed to the APWG members who had successfully completed and presented them.

The second half of the grant was paid out to Sikitoka Mboni for his Tembo (DRC) project. The Holoholo (DRC), Nyala (Kenya) and Nyaturu (Tanzania) project writers would receive their second half of the grant after the minutes of this meeting are posted on the internet.
Booklets for other completed projects will be presented to the moderator as soon as possible.
Presentation of New Guidelines for the APWG Grants
The executive committee members explained the new guidelines which will direct the membership on their writing and publication of the proverbs. Emphasis was put on:
- Payment of the annual membership fee of one thousand Kenya shillings (Ksh.1,000).
- Attendance of meetings and participation at meetings. New members are required to attend two general meetings before presenting any research proposals.
- Grants will only be paid out after the Minutes have been posted on the www.afriprov.org website. This method informs the benefactors about approved and completed projects, and others being undertaken.
- Members to be internet compliant: be able to actively participate and access the afriprov.org website, Facebook Page and vote in the Poll.
- All research proposals are to be presented to, and approved by, the full APWG meeting before members undertake the proverbs collections.
- Production of a “African Proverb of the Month” by every member, picked from their current collection, before the second half of a grant is paid out.
- Include names and contacts of their collaborators if the research is about an ethnic group to which a member did not belong. This would be for verification of the content.
- Part of the payment goes to the collaborators (covering research and production).
- Inclusion of the research proposal at the end of the collection booklet. It would be placed as an appendix.
Promoting the African Proverbs, Saying and Stories Website, Poll and Facebook Page
The moderator explained the importance of using the website to source for information, updating members on various issues, participating in the poll for a proverb choice, posting statements on the Facebook Page and the importance of using the smartphone.
The resources on the website such as Minutes of the meetings and the Proverbs of the Month would help the members to update themselves with details of all meetings, and provide guidance on the layout and contents of the Proverb of the Month.
Ricardo Benon trained the members on how to use their smartphone to link to the website, vote in the poll, post messages on Facebook as well as accessing other resources provided on the website. This was a very successful exercise.
