============================================================

26 August, 1946: The day of our departure for our new mission in East Africa has
dawned at last.  Father General Bishop Raymond Lane, his predecessor Bishop
James E. Walsh and the other General Council members bade "God Speed" to Fathers
William Collins and Louis Bayless on Sunset Hill at Maryknoll, New York.  Father
Daly drove us down to New York City where we joined Fathers Joseph Brannigan and
Albert Good.  We reached Pier 38 in Brooklyn about 1 p.m.  At 4:20 p.m. the four
of us steadily mounted the wobbly gang way of the British Cargo ship Good
Hope Castle
and started our 8,514-mile sea voyage to Capetown, South Africa
and then on to East Africa.  We were happy to finally set off for the Bright
Continent.
