============================================================

While
participating in an Advent retreat for Tanzanian village youth, I was treated to
a spontaneous lesson in inculturation. The youth performed an impromptu skit
depicting the plight of Joseph after the Annunciation.  Before Joseph had the
dream reassuring him that Mary was with child through the Holy Spirit, he
noticed his betrothed looked pregnant. Having no doubts about her virginity, he
exclaimed to the audience, “It must be amoebas!”
