My first assignment in East Africa took me to Nairobi, Kenya where I was the communications coordinator for the Kenya Catholic Bishops’ Conference. I was full of ideas and always in a hurry. One day I rushed into the office of the Kenyan secretary, Mrs. Helen Maeke. I had a handful of letters to send and some to be typed. "What time is it?" I asked her breathlessly, hoping to beat the clock before she knocked off at 5 p.m. Helen looked down at her bare wrist, as if she was consulting a watch. Looking up at me with a twinkle in her eye, she said, "Plenty of time, no hurry." My first lesson in slowing down and taking time with people!
