In the Maryknoll
missionary lore this story is told:  When the United States Armed Forces Radio
stopped broadcasting to East Africa a few years ago, some Maryknollers faced a
severe crisis in their missionary vocations:  no football and baseball scores. 
Out of desperation a solution was quickly suggested:  Send the Tanzanian
Regional Superior to Rome to ask Pope John Paul II to tell the Vatican Radio to
announce the results of the Notre Dame football games.
