"This is the last house I’m going to build." I’ve said that at least 20 times.
But then needy people come along and I have to build just one more…
People like
Candida Theofili. She has been a widow for 20 years. She has eight children of
whom one has died. Two of her older boys who live in Morogoro, Tanzania about
100 miles away built her a very modest home with a grass roof. But the flimsy
doors have already rotted and Candida is not able to "contain" her 12-year-old
grandson Nestor who is an epileptic. He wanders off at times. Thus the need
for a very secure door.
First I
thought about putting a new door on the old house, but then decided it wasn’t
worth it. The house was too rotted. So, Lord, just this one more house. I
decided this after meeting Nestor who is a very affectionate boy. He came
running to meet me the first time he saw me. His right arm is curled up. He
can’t say much more than "Baba" or "Mama." But we walked together to his mother
holding hands.
So Candida’s house is the last of the last. Maybe…
