Sunday 30 December 2007, following the anouncement of the results for my nation Kenya’s General Elections, sporadic violence erupted across the country resulting in the loss of lives and property. I was told that thousands lost their lives and hundreds of thousands were displaced.
Of these, fifty were killed in a CHURCH! Days later, the worst of my fears became a reality when the violence reached our village, or rather, erupted there, as neighbors I had known all my life attacked and killed my parents and little sister.
My elder brother and I escaped. Everywhere we went, we met children and their mothers, some of whom were pregnant or lactating, fleeing from the violence. There was chaos in the city and in the country. Someone told me our leaders were talking and I wondered at their subject of discussion. But what could I do? I am only twelve years old…
