============================================================

    I was showing a visitor around our Maryknoll Region in
Tanzania. We hadn’t gone more than 15 miles when my Land-Rover shuddered to a
stop. I pulled out the automotive manual
and attempted to locate the source of the difficulty. After several hours, a
truck pulled up. The driver, an elderly African, got out to help us. He wriggled
under our vehicle while his
passenger pored over our manual. Emerging with a smile, the earnest mechanic
successfully started up our Land-Rover. His passenger began telling him about
the splendid manual we had. The elderly man replied, "The foreigners may use
books, but we Africans use our heads."
