The Baganda funeral ceremonies in Uganda include the
special Baganda Last Funeral Rites which officially mark the end of the mourning
period. This can take place anytime after the funeral — several days, one
month, or even a year after the burial depending on when the family arrangements
are completed. Clan members arrive at the home of the deceased person. The next
day is a ceremony in which the heir "receives" the children of the deceased
person. The family genealogy is read and the special clan or totem drumbeat is
sounded. There is a division of the inheritance such as money, land, house, and
other property comparable to executing a will. This is followed by a big meal
and drinking banana beer. The next day the family goes to the cemetery to clean
up around the grave.
