Just yesterday a woman came into the clinic in the middle of many things
going on, holding a blanket. Soon women were looking at the blanket when I
realized there was a person in there. I peeked in too, and saw white, blotchy
skin, a tiny head soaked in blood. A brand newborn baby, but I mean NEW! No
one else seemed too excited except ME! I asked to look at the baby. Checked
his pulse. Breathing, thank God! A beautiful boy! Born here in the garbage
dump! New life. A miracle! But what am I supposed to do with this little baby
now? And, where’s the mother? Oh, she’s coming. Of course! And so she did.
I whisked them off to the clinic for a checkup. I was to pick them up again in
an hour, but word got back to me that mom walked down that long, bumpy, muddy
road barefoot. Just another day at Itipini [in South Africa]! But it wasn’t.
A miracle happened this day, and I was simply a witness. What a gift!
