     African parents transmit their history, experience,
wisdom and values (paralleling Deuteronomy 6:20-25) to their children through
proverbs and sayings:

    a. The person who does not listen to an elder’s advice
gets his or her leg broken (Swahili, Eastern and Central Africa).
    b. If you refuse the elder’s advice you will walk the whole
day (Ngoreme, Tanzania).
    c. The brother or sister who does not respect the traditions
of the elders will not be allowed to eat with the elders (Ga, Ghana).
    d. An okra tree does not grow taller than its master (Krio,
Sierra Leone).
    e. A child (young person) does not fear treading on dangerous
ground until he or she gets hurt (stumbles) (Bukusu, Kenya).
    f. A person who is not disciplined cannot be cautioned (Haya,
Tanzania).
    g. A person is one who can listen to counseling (Kerewe,
Tanzania).
    h. Preserve our culture (Swahili, Eastern and Central
Africa).
