In Maryknoll Africa missionary lore this story is told and
retold: Two Maryknoll priests were out hunting in the neighborhood of the
Serengeti wildlife refuge in northwestern Tanzania. The older priest was an
experienced hunter. The younger missioner had just arrived in Africa. As they
ambled through the bush looking for a suitable animal they rounded a clump of
trees and happened on a large male lion. At that point the quick-thinking
younger missioner dropped to the ground and grabbed his backpack. He pulled out
his tennis shoes and started to put them on. With that the older priest
exclaimed: "What are you doing? You can’t outrun a lion." The newly arrived
priest said: "I don’t need to. I just have to outrun you!"
