Report of the Meeting of the African Proverbs Working Group, Nairobi, Kenya, 7 June 2008

The meeting started at 10:30 a.m. and ended at 1 p.m.

1. Each member described his research on proverbs and stories from various African languages including Ewe, Gikuyu, Sheng and Swahili. Dr. Wanjohi distributed the Special Issue of Wajibu: A Journal of Social and Ethical Concern, 23, 1-2 (2008). The theme is ” Kenya : Redefining Ourselves” and contains stories by members of the Coalition of Concerned Kenyan Writers. The back cover is a selection of youth sayings on peacemaking and conflict resolution from the “African Proverb of the Month” for March, 2008.

2. We discussed nine Ewe ( Ghana) proverbs presented by Professor Aghemenu and picked one to be used as “African Proverb of the Month” for August, 2008. All nine proverbs will be included the Booklet of 100 Ewe ( Ghana ) Proverbs that would include African symbols as illustrations of the proverbs. He commended the other members for their thoughtful comments on his work.

3. Professor Aghemenu showed various digital photographs of our working group stored on his computer.

The next meeting will be at Christ the Teacher Catholic Chaplaincy Center, Kenyatta University at 10 a.m. on Saturday, 5 July, 2008. It will include a tour of the religious art in the chapel.
