Opening

The meeting started with a prayer by Gabriel Odhiambo in the Luo language. The chairperson then welcomed all the members to the meeting.

Proverb of the Month Polls

The Moderator encouraged the members to vote before the meeting started.
He confirmed that the Proverbs of the Month had been received from the members and were enough to cover the full year until February 2019. He reminded the members to be gender sensitive when writing their work.

The Secretary informed the members that the Proverb of the Month would be edited professionally in order to present a better image and improve quality. This was a request from the benefactors, and Fr. Healey would not be able to continue editing them. A professional editor had been interviewed and had edited some of the work.

Each member would be charged between $15 and $20 (Ksh.1,500 and Ksh.2,000) to facilitate this work.

2018 APWG Calendar

This had been produced and the members were encouraged to print copies for their use. It carried the theme of the year as “Youth/Young People”. He observed that many proverbs which were considered to be of importance in many African communities referred to family and children issues. Future themes may be chosen from these for the future calendars.

Presentation of Research Proposals for the Collection of 100 African Proverbs

A total of 14 proposals were received by the Executive Committee. 11 members presented a printed copy of their proposal for the new collection of proverbs, and also presented it verbally at the meeting. Three members (in bold below) presented to the Executive Committee outside the meeting. This allowed the members to ask questions related to each presentation as well as allow for corrections.

New members who met the requirements to begin writing would present their proposed languages to the committee in order for them to be guided and be given approval. The final decision on the proposals to be funded would be determined by the Committee as soon as would be possible.

Proposals would be sent to the Executive Committee.

  2. Date of next meeting
The next full members’ meeting would be communicated at a later date.
