============================================================

            On April 29, 1994, twenty-two people, mostly schoolgirls, were killed in an attack in a Catholic girls’ school in Muramba in the Gisenyi Region of Rwanda near the DRC border. During the genocidal war between Hutu and Tutsi, a group of armed men broke into the school ordering the children to divide up into ethnic groups; Hutus on one side, Tutsi on the other. Witnessing to the fact that they were one loving community, the schoolgirls refused.

            The men ruthlessly opened fire, killing seventeen girls and wounding fourteen. A Belgian missionary nun, Sister Margarita Bosmans, the directress of another school nearby who tried to stop the assassins, was also killed, along with four lay people.
