Report of the Meeting of the African Proverbs Working Group, Nairobi, Kenya, 13 May 2008


Hekima College, Nairobi, Kenya

Present:

  1. Evans Nyakundi (Acting Secretary) — Assistant Librarian at Hekima College
  2. Francis Njuguna — Freelance journalist
  3. Professor Cephas Agbemenu — Fine Arts Department, Kenyatta University
  4. Rev. Joseph Healey, M.M. — Moderator
Absent with apologies
  1. Joseph Kariuki — Assistant Moderator
  2. Rev. Thomas Komakech, A.J. — Apostles of Jesus General Council
  3. Jesuit Theology Students at Hekima College (on leave)

The meeting started at 5 p.m. and ended at 6:30 p.m.

  1. Each member described his research on proverbs and stories from various African languages including Ewe, Gikuyu, Gusii, Sheng and Swahili.
  2. Plan for “African Proverb of the Month”:
    1. June, 2008: Arabic (Libya) proverb from From Sebha with Love: A Collection of Libyan Proverbs — Chilukuri Bhuvaneswar
    2. July, 2008: Tonga ( Zambia ) Proverb — Bboloka Bubala Nchimunya
    3. August, 2008: Ewe ( Benin , Ghana , Nigeria and Togo ) Proverb – Cephas Agbemenu. On the theme of “Reconciliation and Peace.”
  3. Professor Cephas Agbemenu was awarded a grant of $500 to compile a Booklet of 100 Ewe ( Ghana ) Proverbs that would include African symbols as illustrations of the proverbs. 10 copies (photocopied) will be distributed in the normal way.

The next meeting will be at Kenyatta University on a date to be decided later.
