One year I visited my 80-year-old plus Uncle Chuck in Miami Beach, Florida,
USA. When I asked him what he would like to do he quickly answered, "See a
video of Bishop Fulton Sheen with you." In the early 1950s he had been a big
fan of Sheen’s TV program "Life is Worth Living" on the Dumont Television
Network. Now over 40 years later Uncle Chuck loved to watch the video
re-runs. That day we watched a clever episode on the theme "Personal
Relationships." Bishop Sheen began by telling a humorous story on an
airplane flight from New York to Atlanta, Georgia. He sat next to a handsome
young businessman and they struck up an immediate friendship. On the flight
the pilot was very sociable and introduced himself and the stewardesses over
the loud speaker. Then the businessman spoke with the stewardesses by name
during the flight. After landing in Atlanta Sheen and the businessman walked
side my side into the Arrivals Lounge where the bishop was introduced to the
man’s wife. During the pleasant conversation the plane’s crew walked by led
by the attractive stewardesses. The businessman greeted each by name. His
wife was a bit taken aback so the man quickly added, "Oh, the pilot
introduced himself and the stewardesses by name at the beginning of the
flight." So what’s the pilot’s name" his wife quickly asked. Sheepishly the
husband said, "I can’t remember." Finishing the story Bishop Sheen then
launched into his teaching. Both my Uncle Chuck and I enjoyed the program
very much.
Later my uncle heard that a Tanzanian priest, Father Charles Bundu of
Shinyanga Diocese, loved Sheen’s radio programs. So Uncle Chuck sent to
Bundu some of his videotapes of Sheen’s TV programs for the priest to watch.
The videos are my uncle’s lasting gift to Tanzania.
