Father Don Sybertz buys three new yellow tennis balls for a doubles match at the
Youth Centre in Musoma Town, Tanzania. Even though there have been heavy rains,
the cement court itself is dry by mid-afternoon. During the first set one
player’s erratic swing sends a ball high over the cement wall into the compound
of the adjoining regional soccer stadium. Good-bye New Ball No. 1. A little
later a misplayed shot sends a ball dribbling outside the court though
the open door of the outhouse and, of course, right into the latrine hole.
Good-bye New Ball No. 2. No problem. There are still a couple of
extra old balls to play with. Early in the second set an errant ball
skips through the wet grass and plops into a newly formed mud hole caused by the
heavy rains. A dry yellow tennis ball is suddenly a wet brown tennis
ball. Good-bye New Ball No. 3. Now Don sadly realizes that this just
isn’t going to be his day. The tennis game is called off because of lack of
good balls. The only winner is Murphy’s Law ("Anything that can go wrong,
will").
