One day Jesus told the people, "We must love God and love our neighbor as we
love ourselves." Someone asked him, "Who is my neighbor?" and Jesus told this
story: "Once there was a man making a safari from Ngorongoro Crater (a famous
animal reserve and tourist attraction in Tanzania) to the place of Loliondo. On
the way he was attacked by thieves, robbed, beaten, and left for dead, food for
the hyenas. A laibon passed by in his fine witch doctor robes, and when he saw
the man, he passed by on the other side. In the same way a legwanan came to the
place. When the chief saw the man lying there he also passed by on the other
side. Finally, an olmeg (farmer, barbarian, ‘dark, evil one’) came driving by
in his Landrover, and when he saw injured man he was moved with pity. He
stopped and went to him, cleaned his wounds and gave him medicine. He put him
in his car and carried him to the hospital in Loliondo. He said to the doctor
there, ‘Take care of him, and when I return, I will pay his bill.’ Now do you
know who your neighbor is?"
