Some
years ago in Departure Lounge in Entebbe Airport, Uganda I was waiting for a
plane to Tanzania. For a while all the passengers were quiet, but then there
was a stir in the crowd. We heard the plane’s engines revving up. En masse we
moved toward the exit. Then we saw the plane’s doors closing. We went quickly
out onto the walkway. The plane slowly began to taxi toward the nearest
runway. We followed in a brisk walk. A frantic stewardess held up her hands
and yelled, "Stop, stop."
But we surged
passed her and literally began running after the plane as it moved toward the
end of the runway. The excited stewardess yelled again, "No, No, it’s only a
warm-up of the engine. The plane will come back to get you." Suddenly we all
stopped and realized what we were doing — running after a moving plane. We
sheepishly walked back to the terminal and began waiting again.
