One example of
liturgical inculturation in Western Tanzania is to sit during the reading of the
Gospel. This comes from the African tradition that when a powerful chief sent
his messenger to a village, the villagers would sit in an open area. The
messenger would stand in their midst and announced the chief’s news and
directives. So too with the Gospel during the liturgy. The reader stands in
the midst of the Christian community that is seated. The reader proclaims the
Good News of Jesus Christ, the Chief of Chiefs (a Luba, Democratic Republic of
the Congo name) as announced by one of God’s four messengers or evangelists —
Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.
