In St. Jude
Thaddeus Small Christian Community (SCC) one of the lay ministries is the "Good
Neighbor" or "Good Samaritan" who is responsible to visit everyone in the
neighborhood to see who is sick, in need of special help, has a special problem,
or is a lax Catholic and needs encouragement. One day the SCC’s "Good
Neighbor," Leocardia Evaristi, came across a 30-year-old woman who belonged to
an African Traditional Religion and who was dying. The next day she returned to
baptize her. The woman died the very next day after Leocardia’s visit. At the
next weekly meeting of the SCC a member said: "Leocardia couldn’t cure her
physically, but she healed her spiritually." A similar thing is said when SCCs
members help lax Catholics to return to the sacraments.
