Driving along a dusty Tanzanian road in Mara Region Father Don Larmore stopped
to give a ride to a woman who was vigorously waving. As soon as Don said “Yes”
to the African woman her three children also piled into the back of the pick-up
truck together with her lame uncle and another traveling companion. A chicken,
a bag of cassava and a hamper of food were loaded on too. Now Don is more wary
about even a simple “Yes.” He is even more convinced that the first words an
African baby learns are “Naomba lifti” (Swahili for “May I have a ride” or “I
ask for a ride”).
