============================================================

    In 1996 Hillary Clinton, the wife of the former President of the United States, published a book on children and family values with the title "It Takes a Village" based on an African proverb. That same year Maryknoll Father Don Sybertz and I published the first edition of our book "Towards An African Narrative Theology". In Chapter Three on "community” we used the African proverb: It takes a whole village to raise a child. My brother-in law wrote me asking: "Did Hillary Clinton ‘steal’ the proverb from you or did you ‘steal’ it from her? I wrote back saying: "Neither. We both ‘stole’ the proverb from the Nigerian people who coined it many, many years ago."
