============================================================

Emanueli, a poor farmer, came to our door at the rectory of Issenye village in
Tanzania, where my husband Erik and I worked as Maryknoll lay missioners and
administered the local parish. Assuming he was selling the five-pound bucket of
sorghum grain he held in his hands, I asked the price. He promptly replied, “I’m
not selling anything. This is from my field, and I’m bringing it as a gift to
God in thanksgiving for my harvest.”
