Blessed Isidore Bakanja was a Congolese (Democratic Republic of the Congo) lay
Christian and catechist who endured insults and beatings from his boss Longange
Van Cauter because he was wearing the scapular, the symbol of his baptism. As
Bakanja was serving breakfast, Longange noticed once more that he was still
wearing his scapular. He ordered Bakanja to be given 25 strokes of the whip.
Bakanja remained submissive and bore the unjust punishment patiently. “What
does a whipping matter?” he reflected, “Jesus himself was given the same
punishment. But taking off my scapular is something different!” He was more
and more determined never to part from it. So much the worse if they beat him.
Bakanja died from the wounds inflicted by his beating on 15th August 1909 having
forgiven his torturer saying: “Yes, if I die, I will pray for him in heaven.”
