Bishop-elect John Oballa of Ngong Diocese, Kenya arrives at the
Maryknoll Society House in Nairobi, Kenya unexpectedly to visit me and
says, “I am arriving African style.” So I answer with the African
proverb: A visitor is never an interruption. This experience
teaches us a lot about the African values of personal relationships,
spontaneity and hospitality. During my many years in Africa I have
experienced again and again how the person is more important to Africans
than the work or the job. We in the Western world can learn a great
deal. These African values are also deeply Christian values.
