This morning, 13 April, 2007, I went to the Uganda High Commission Office in
downtown Nairobi, Kenya to get my visa to Uganda. I was told ahead of time
that if I submitted my application form by 10 a.m. I could get the visa by
2:30 p.m. (a wait of four and a half hours). So I was ready to wait or come
back in the afternoon.
When I got to the Visa Desk I struck up a conversation with the woman in
charge and politely
asked her if she was from Uganda. "Yes," she said, "I come from the Rubaga
section of Kampala."That’s very interesting," I said, "because I plan to
visit the Kampala Catholic Archdiocesan Historical Archives near Rubaga
Cathedral." When she said that she is a member of the Baganda Ethnic Group I
quickly commented, "So am I. I have been initiated into the Buffalo Clan and
my Luganda name is "Ssentamu". That started us off on a lively discussion of
the football (soccer) teams of the different Baganda clans. When I handed in
my application and photo, she pointed to a chair said, "Please sit over
there for a couple minutes." Within five minutes (not four and a half
hours!) I had my visa. It must have been the inspiration of Bishop Joseph
Mukwaya, a member of the Buffalo Clan, whom I plan to visit in Uganda.
