We Maryknoll Sisters opened a clinic in Chukudum in
southern Sudan in 1994. The people were preparing to celebrate the 11th
anniversary of their "liberation" after driving northern military forces from
their area in Sudan’s ongoing civil war. Rain poured down in sheets just before
the festivities were to start. The sun appeared in time for the party, but so
did two MIG fighter jets from the north, dropping six bombs on the community.
The people jumped into ditches for shelter. Miraculously, not one shrapnel bomb
exploded. Relieved, the people climbed out of the ditches and began feasting
and dancing. They told us their Sudanese saint, Blessed Bakhita whose name
means "Lucky One," had buried the bombs in the mud.
