The 2008 African Proverbs Calendar is online on the African Proverbs, Sayings and Stories Website (www.afriprov.org)! Check under the Resources link on the left hand side of the page. The direct link is: http://www.afriprov.org/cal08/jan08.htm
The 2008 calendar includes a selection of 12 African Proverbs from 18 different African countries: Benin, Burundi, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Ghana, Kenya, Libya, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Sudan, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
The full explanation of the proverb including the Biblical parallels can be accessed by clicking on EXPLANATION. This calendar includes a map of Africa with the subject country highlighted in yellow. A map of the country of that particular proverb can be accessed by clicking on the name of the country on the EXPLANATION page. There is a theme for each month (i.e. “Unity,” “Peacemaking,” “Success”) that corresponds to the proverb of that month, along with African-themed photographs.
This year we held a “Photo Contest” to encourage user participation in the creation of our calendar. We welcomed all users to submit African themed photographs that best matched the chosen themes for each month. We are looking forward to continuing the “Photo Contest” for future calendars.
You can print out the calendar and use it as a Wall Calendar or as a Desk Calendar. For one creative online use of the calendar for each month in 2008 go to: Quiet Thoughts Greeting Cards Website: http://www.quietthoughts.com
We are always interested in how you reproduce, distribute, and use this African calendar with Africa-related groups, schools, religious groups, community organizations, educational campaigns, other websites, etc. If you do reproduce or distribute the calendar, please send us a note (moderator@afriprov.org) explaining your usage. We’d be delighted to hear from you!
Many hands were involved in the production of the 2008 African Proverbs Calendar. Special thanks go to Nicholas Adongo, Jennifer Ehrentraut, Father Joseph Healey, and Joseph Kariuki.
We plan to choose 12 new African proverbs for the 2009 African Proverbs Calendar. We depend on interested people to continue to send in new African Proverbs (especially from new African countries) in the three paragraph format. See the “African Proverb of the Month” on our website for examples.
You can also find online our African Proverbs Calendars starting from 2002 under Resources on the left hand side of the “Front Page” (“Home Page”).
Please continue to send in new African Proverbs (especially from new African countries not yet identified on our map) in the three paragraph format. See the “African Proverb of the Month” on our website for examples. You may e-mail your contributions in the aforementioned format to moderator@afriprov.org.
Best wishes in 2008!
