One Sunday morning at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Oyster Bay in Dar es
Salaam, Tanzania President Julius Nyerere sat in the front row (pew)
with his security guards. The church was packed with many people
standing on the sides and in the back. At communion time Nyerere and his
guards stood up and went up to receive communion. Seeing the front row
empty some women who had been standing on the side moved into the vacant
space. When he came back to the front row Nyerere did not want his
guards to move the women out. Rather he went to the back of the church
and humbly stood there with his guards until the end of mass.
