At the Catholic Church Center for People with AIDS in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, I found an exuberant young woman singing with a class of 13-year0old girls about the importance of saying “no” to beckoning young men:
“Artists say, we are so beautiful.
But we, pupils, say no because we are too young.
But conductors say, we are so beautiful.
But we, pupils, say keep AIDS off you through your self-respect
and dignity.
Teachers say, we are so beautiful.
But we, pupils, say no to sex.
Masons say, we are so beautiful.
But we, pupils, say do not be overtaken by the pleasures of this
world.
Butchers say, we are so beautiful.
But we, pupils, say take care of yourselves.”
The pupils in the classroom loved the song so much. Other pupils in the yard sang along.
