In 1955 I was assigned to Zanaki Parish in Musoma Diocese, Tanzania. I hired
Julius Nyerere to teach me Zanaki, the ethnic language he spoke. A fully
qualified teacher and a committed Christian, Julius was anxious for me to build
a mission among his people. For three months he stayed in Mwisenge with his
friend Oswald Marwa and I stayed in the rectory of Musoma Town Parish. Julius
came every day to the rectory to teach me Zanaki. With a Master’s degree in
History and Economics from Edinburgh, Scotland, my language teacher would later
become (in 1961) the Father of the newly independent country of Tanganyika, now
Tanzania. Julius Nyerere was to have a profound influence on me for the rest of
my mission life. He awakened in me the need for human development as an
expression of God’s love and concern for all, but especially for the poor.
