The Baganda people in Uganda are well known for their long and complicated
greetings. During a visit to Kampala I learned the correct morning greeting
(that used tones) so I could surprise a Ugandan friend of mine, Sister
Alexandrina of the Little Sisters of St. Francis. On the day that we were
going to meet, I carefully memorized and practiced many times the morning
greeting realizing that it is different from the afternoon greeting. Well,
Alexandrina was delayed and suddenly arrived at 3 p.m. She greeted me warmly in
English. I was speechless. A bit flustered, I could only blurt out: "I wish
you had come in the morning so I could have used my Luganda greeting."
