============================================================

    A special moment in my African journey was August, 1990
when Bishop Joseph Mukwaya of Kiyinda Mityana Diocese invited me to Uganda to be
initiated into the Buffalo Clan. This is his clan or totem in the tradition of
the Baganda Ethnic Group.  Kayiira, the head of the clan (a young man whom I
call “Grandfather) officiated at a special ceremony of prayers and blessings.  I
was carried on the shoulders of an elder across the threshold of the home of the
Kayiira (that symbolizes the honor given to the Buffalo Clan to carry the Kabaka,
the leader of the Baganda people).  I was given the name "Ssentamu" (in memory
of Joe Mukwaya’s deceased older brother) that means “cooking pot.”   Now
buffaloes are my favorite animal.  As a clan member I can’t eat buffalo meat and
a certain kind of mushroom.
