When Narus in Southern Sudan was bombed by an Antonov
plane of the Khartoum government in September, 2000, we had to lie on the ground
with hundreds of schoolchildren. I had my arms around Sister Madeline McHugh,
and a little child crawled in between us. I could feel the child’s tears on my
arm as the Antonov circled and descended. We prayed intercessions and the Hail
Mary. The presence of church people helped keep everyone calm.
