There was a doctor at Bugando Hospital in Mwanza,
Tanzania named Mwana Mayombi that means "the Son of Mayombi." He encountered
terrible problems in his life. First, his aunt who was suffering from cancer was
brought to him at the hospital. While taking care of her, Dr. Mayombi received
news that rustlers had stolen his cattle in his home village. He left his aunt
in the care of the other doctors and went home to find out about the theft. When
he arrived home he received a telephone call from the hospital saying that his
aunt had died. He said: "Bring her home." The other doctors brought her body
home.
While they were busy preparing for his aunt’s burial, Dr. Mayombi got a telephone call from his home in Mabatini, a section of Mwanza,
that a fire had gutted his house. He only asked on the phone, "Is everyone
safe?" They answered, "Yes." After his aunt’s funeral he received a telephone
call from Dar es Salaam that his daughter had died in a car accident. Dr.
Mayombi told them to bring her body home for burial too.
After the burial Dr. Mayombi asked his father for a Bible.
He opened to the Book of Job and read. After he finished reading, Dr. Mayombi
told his father and all his relatives: "When I came out of my mother’s stomach
all I had was given to me by God. Now God has taken back what belongs to God. My
aunt died, my cattle were stolen, my house was gutted by fire, my daughter died.
But I continue to thank God for all that he has given me. I’m not going to
bother myself about the loss of my cattle. I will go back to work at the
hospital."
But his father and his relatives tried to prevent him from
going back to work before settling the case of the cattle. They said: "You
should go to a diviner to find out the cause of your problems." Dr. Mayombi
said, "No, I accept everything as part of God’s plan. God is in charge of my
life, not the witches." He told his family three times, "Please let me go."
Finally they let him go back to his work at Bugando Hospital. Dr. Mayombi was
able to bear the pain of his losses through the grace of God. They called him
"Little Job."
