Some years ago a trained Spiritual Director from the
United States was assigned to Tanzania to work in Dar es Salaam. He was highly
qualified and very capable especially in one-on-one spiritual direction and
counseling. But after a short time he returned to the United States because he
had so very few requests for one-on-one spiritual direction. Rather the local
Africans requested a kind of "group spiritual direction" that was more
compatible with their communitarian values.
