Valentine, one of my students at a school for
freedom fighters in Maputo, Mozambique, helped to show me how the incarnation
works today. He told me how he had joined the liberation struggle right out of
school. "I thought I was better that the others because I had finished high
school," he confessed. "I thought that I would be made a commander. But I was
treated like everyone else." He explained that his clothes became torn, he had
no soap for bathing and little food. He began to think that he had made a
mistake and that life was better under colonialism. "Then in my downtrodden
position," he said, "I learned the beauty of the revolution. I learned that my
suffering was to help others. Now my life is to serve the people."
