In the winter of 1979 I gave a talk on Africa to an
ecumenical gathering in Islip, New York. During the question period a woman
asked me how I managed to stay so young looking. I was 41 at the time but looked
younger. I smilingly answered: “I drink from the ‘Fountain of Youth’ in
Tanzania.” Then after a dramatic pause I added: “But its location is a secret.”
Immediately, a man at the back of the hall stood up and
said: “Father, I know you are not telling the truth because all the lakes in
Tanzania are polluted!”
